Writing at its highest stakes – how prose, poetry and creativity will make or break the English language in the coming digital age
Saturday, January 16, 2016 11:00 AM-1:00 PM
Saturday, January 16, 2016, the California Writers Club, Sacramento Branch proudly presents Scott Thomas Anderson at the Luncheon Meeting. His topic is “Writing at its highest stakes – how prose, poetry and creativity will make or break the English language in the coming digital age.”
Anderson – a professional crime, culture and travel journalist – will look back at Shakespeare’s concept of “the Duty of Poets” and how prophetic its meaning has become as the world’s youngest generations are taught linguistic ideals through fragmented, hyper-abbreviated platforms like Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. What is the future of English if today’s writers, poets, journalists and teachers don’t recognize a threat, as well as the importance of their own roles in the public sphere? And what is the duty of today’s adult writers who are now the last living people in the history of the world, who will remember the world, before the Internet?
Scott Thomas Anderson is an award-winning journalist who is the Chief Editor of The Roseville Press Tribune, Rocklin’s Placer Herald and The Granite Bay View. He has written for publications such as Sacramento News & Review, The Real Edition.com andThe Irish Independent, Dublin’s largest daily newspaper. He’s been interviewed about homicide investigations nationally on the Travel Channel and internationally on Ireland’s Radio 1:Drivetime. Between May 2010 and October 2011, a journalism fellowship out of Washington D.C. allowed Anderson to spend 18 months as an embedded reporter with California law enforcement agencies, partnering with officers on night patrols, accompanying detectives on warrant searches and probation sweeps, observing SWAT operations and spending hundreds of hours with attorneys and victims’ advocates in small-town courtrooms. During this time, he also traveled to different rural communities across the United States. The result was his first nonfiction book, Shadow People: How Meth-driven Crime is Eating at the Heart of Rural America, an exploration of nation’s modern methamphetamine crisis. In April 2015, Anderson’s newest nonfiction book was released, The Cutting Four-piece: crime and tragedy in an era of prison overcrowding.
