Kathy Landis on “Book Tours: Cover to Cover”

Friday, October 3, 2014,  9:00 a.m. – 11 a.m.

kathy-landisThe California Writers Club, Sacramento Branch’s Writers Network presents Kathy Landis speaking on “Book Tours: Cover to Cover”

Since the mid-1990s, media escort Kathy Landis has logged thousands of miles in the company of authors and actors, consumer advocates and CEOs, as they travel Northern California’s media circuit. You might not recognize Kathy, who’s behind the wheel and behind the scenes, but you’d recognize many of her guests who’ve appeared on television, spoken on radio, signed books, and drawn crowds at political, business and community events.

In her presentation, “Book Tours: Cover to Cover,” Kathy explains the media escort’s role, and the benefits of hiring a media escort for a book tour. She takes her audiences behind the scenes on a virtual media tour that begins with a radio interview and moves on to a television appearance. A series of bookstore “drop-ins” fill the gap between live media and an evening author presentation and book signing.

Along the way, Kathy provides tips for securing interviews, and suggests media outlets that welcome local authors. She offers preparation hints for radio and television interviews, shares the benefits of meeting local book sellers, and reveals what happens before the “curtain goes up” at a major book signing. Kathy concludes by sharing a few of her most amusing, unnerving and unforgettable author tour experiences.

During her a 30-year career, Kathy Landis has written for consumer, custom and trade publications. Her byline appears regularly in Boys’ Life and Road King magazines. Kathy also works as a media escort, coordinating special events, book, and media tours in the Sacramento Region. She is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

August Writers Network: Westley Turner on “Story—What it is and How You Can Make it Better”

Friday, August 1, 2014,  9:00 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Westley TurnerProfessional editor and writer Westley Turner will address the CWC Breakfast meeting at IHOP on Friday, August 1, 2014. His topic is “Story: What it is and How You Can Make it Better.” He will share what things you should look out for before submitting your work for editing and publication, what he calls a bit of “preventative editing.” Westley served as a judge at the most recent Northern California Publishers and Authors Book Awards, and he will talk about what he looks for when judging contest submissions.

Westley was raised by two schoolteachers (his mother taught English, his father music), so he should have been well prepared for a career in education; however, that’s not the path he chose to follow. After a couple decades in the computer industry, he returned to the same university where his mother had taught to work towards a teaching position himself. Again, life didn’t follow the intended route. Currently he works for the State of California and writes and edits in his spare time.

Most of Westley’s stories began as bedtime tales told to his children (eight of them now, and nine grandkids!). As the children grew up, so did the stories. One day someone said, “Hey, that stuff is pretty good. Maybe you should write it down.” Thus was born another writer. Joining a few writers’ groups helped him realize his passion for the English language (and all languages in general). Currently, Westley is taking a course in linguistics. He constantly aims to improve himself and is willing to help others along the way.

Although focusing primarily on Sci-Fi as a youth, Westley finds it quite enjoyable to expand his horizons, picking up books he would never have considered in the past. He has successfully edited a few books to publication (most recently a non-fiction piece on Hispanic soldiers of WWII). He finds that sharing his knowledge with others allows him to learn from them as much as they learn from him.

The public is invited. CWC membership not required.

May Writers Network: Author Linda Bello-Ruiz on a memoir with hope

Friday, May 2nd, 2014,  9:00 a.m. – 11 a.m.

LindaBelloRuiz

The California Writers Club, Sacramento Branch’s Writers Network presents Linda Bello-Ruiz, author of From Tears to Triumph: My Journey to The House of Hope. Linda Caridad Cassells (Bello-Ruiz) co-founded and directed the House of Hope—the first safe-haven for street girls, runaways, and underage prostitutes in Costa Rica. She was a twenty-three-year-old college dropout when she took on the project, and relied on her faith and determination which was much bigger than her curriculum vitae.

During the summer of 1970, nineteen-year-old Linda stops on the way home from work to talk to a handsome stranger. That chance meeting on a San Francisco street corner changed the course of her life. Linda’s compassionate, gripping, and soul-searching memoir tells the story of her remarkable journey from the darkness of despair and crushed dreams to the creation of a house that provided hope. After her return to the United States in 1976, she went back to college and earned her master’s Degree in Psychology from Sonoma State University.
