Lorna Griess is an artist and author. After beginning her nursing career in Sacramento, she joined the Navy Nurse Corps in 1961 and was assigned to Rhode Island Naval Hospital. During that time, she was involved with the Cuban Missile Crisis. After her two year term in the Navy ended, she went home to Sacramento to live and work. Later, with the war building up in Vietnam, she joined the Army Nurse Corps and took an assignment in Vietnam.
After a tour in Vietnam, she made the Army Nurse Corps her career and served in hospitals worldwide for almost thirty years. She retired as a full Colonel and chief nurse at Letterman Army Medical Center on the Presidio in San Francisco. After retirement, she joined the Military Officers Association of America, California Council of Chapters, and became their legislative liaison. She also serves as a veteran’s advocate in the California State Legislature. Her book, 2d Surgical Hospital, a memoir about her tour as a nurse in a MASH unit in South Vietnam, was published in late 2016 and is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble in all media forms, including audiobook.
