Friday, May 6, 2016, 9:00 a.m. – 11 a.m.
On Friday, May 6, 2016, Monica Stark, editor of Valley Community Newspapers, will address the CWC Sacramento Branch Writers Network breakfast meeting on “Community Journalism”.
What do you picture when you hear the term community journalist? Monica will explore the various facets of community journalism. She will also discuss opportunities for writers to contribute.
She grew up in San Jose, attended UC Berkeley and graduated in 2004 with a bachelor’s in English literature. At the time she didn’t think she had what it takes to be a journalist. Even then, journalism was a dying profession and her parents advised against writing as a career—so she decided to enroll in the teaching credential program at Sac State. Big mistake!
Monica truly loves what she does and can’t imagine doing anything else. She has been in the business for 12 years. As editor of Valley Community Newspapers in Sacramento, she has been editing the Land Park News, East Sacramento News, Pocket Newsand Arden-Carmichael News for 3 and a half years. Each of those papers is published twice a month. She is also the editor of the weekly West Sacramento News-Ledger. All of these publications rely on community journalism.
