At the August 6 meeting, Bobbie Christensen gave an interesting and informative talk on “Self-Publishing Successfully in Today’s Market.” The meeting room was filled with many writers interested in self-publishing their book.
Christensen is director of www.BooksAmerica.com, a firm that helps authors self-publish and sell their books. She started the company 15 years ago after freelance writing for three years. Now she is the author of seven self-published books. “It is important to carefully follow well-planned steps in self- publishing,” Christensen emphasized.
- Select an editor that you can work with, but who is not familiar with your the subject. Consider whether you wish to cut costs and hire a student or pay a higher price for a professional.
- Locate a graphic designer. Decide whether you want your book in color or black and white.
- Choose a printer. Get different bids and compare prices. You must decide on size, covers, and weight.
- Obtain an ISBN number. You can complete a form online.
You must decide how much it will cost you to print your book, and how much it will cost you to market it. Check stores to see how much they charge for similar books.
Christensen recommends her book, Writing, Publishing & Marketing Your First Book (or 7th) for further assistance.
The September 3 speaker will be Don Chaddock, editor of the Folsom Telegraph. His topic is “The Role of Community Papers in an Electronic World.”
